Jack's (a pseudonym for confidentiality), a major retail corporation, is incentivized to enroll Medicaid members in the Food as Medicine (FAM) government program, which provides each member with $50 per month for healthy foods. Jack's benefits financially for each member they enroll and from the $50 being spent in their stores.
To boost sign-ups, Jack's decided to offer free 1:1 dietitian consultations and develop a holistic health app that uses purchase history data to create personalized health plans for FAM and Jack's members. They partnered with Board of Innovation to research and develop the app and consultation program.
We identified three key challenges we needed to answer in developing the app for Jack’s. Each of these opportunities became their own epic.
To identify the most valuable features, it was essential to understand the target audience's pain points and their relationship with their current diet. This helped us pinpoint gaps that potential features could address.
Since the app relies heavily on user data, it was crucial to understand how different audiences perceive consent and third-party data sharing, as well as the level of control users need over their data to provide informed consent.
Harnessing user data, such as purchase and medical history, is central to the app. With over 200+ data points per consumer, we needed to identify the most useful data, display it effectively, and present it without overwhelming users.
My team and I conducted 1:1 qualitative interviews to gather firsthand insights into users' dietary habits, challenges, and motivations related to healthy eating.
By synthesizing these interviews, we developed detailed journey maps and comprehensive personas to visualize the user experience and identify critical touchpoints.
I created quick prototypes of various feature ideas and tested them with users to gather feedback and refine concepts. This iterative process helped us hone in on the most promising features.
I designed future vision screens of the selected features, providing a polished and cohesive representation of how these features would function within the app, ensuring they effectively addressed the identified pain points.
A health portal where users can create appointments with Jack's HCP's right from the app.
Recommendations turn actionable with Better Bites. Jack's HCP recc's will be integrated in the app with food swap suggestions.
Related articles relevant to patients' health concerns will provide users with valuable and helpful info.
Dietitian recommended recipes are intentionally displayed first to make their health goals easily accessible and actionable.
Recipe Page: Ingredients, cook time, and estimated price are prominently displayed to help users make quick decisions about which meals fit their budget and lifestyle.
The Auto-populate cart feature allows budget conscious users to automatically fill their cart with lowest-cost ingredients, saving them time and money..
A tiered rewards system gamifies healthy eating behavior by awarding points to the user for every healthy meal cooked.
Other ways to earn points are scattered throughout the app experience, such as purchasing Better Bites.
The user can redeem their points for items that promote a healthier lifestyle.
I created quick prototypes of various consent onboarding screens for testing.
A focus of our testing was to evaluate the balance between promised features and users' willingness to consent, focusing on personalized meal plans and privacy concerns.
My team and I also conducted surveys and 1:1 qualitative interviews with users to understand their perceptions of consent and third-party data sharing.
We identified key privacy principles necessary for users to provide informed consent comfortably.
Finalized onboarding screens based on these principles, ensuring they effectively addressed user concerns.
